Spurred Tortoise and Mhorr Gazelle in savannah BIOPARC

BIOPARC Valencia is home to three species of African turtles: dewclaws, leopard and articulated from Home. We can see two of these species near the Kitum cave and in the savanna area inhabited by the Mhorr gazelle. The spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) It draws attention due to its size, since it is the largest in africa and one of the largest in the world, along with the Galapagos giant tortoises y that of Aldabra. Many African cultures consider spurred tortoises as mediators between men and the gods. Small isolated populations survive in national parks and reserves and are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The leopard (Stigmochelys pardalis) It is easily recognizable by its spotted shell that resembles the skin of the animal after which it is named.

In addition, the park has a specially prepared quarantine area, with interior and exterior space, which currently houses 11 copies that come from seizures. These animals, after an intense veterinary examination that includes deworming, remain controlled to guarantee their well-being and correct development and growth until their fate is decided. In this space is the other African species present in BIOPARC, the Home articulated turtle (Kinixys homeana) that inhabits tropical forests and today is in a Vulnerable situation and included in the IUCN red list (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
