Freshwater fish have recently been added to the inhabitants of BIOPARC, helping to keep the water clean in an ecological way.

It has been 51 days since the KITUM cave was opened and its 370.000 liters of water are already being inhabited by hundreds of attractively colored fish that contribute to the cleaning and maintenance of the waters naturally. At BIOPARC, in water treatment, the elimination of solids from the water through roughing and sieving, mechanical filtration of water every hour in the fish and crocodile enclosure and every half hour in the hippopotamus enclosure stands out. In addition, the highest hygienic quality is guaranteed thanks to the use of ozone and ultraviolet radiation. All this work will now be completed by living beings just as it happens in nature, thanks to a series of fish species that inhabit the waters of the rivers.

Most are different species of African cichlids, fish that reside in the fresh waters of large rivers and are herbivorous and very voracious.

These are very brightly colored fish, which in addition to a cleaning function provide an aesthetic vision thanks to their chromaticism. In fact, they are the most attractive African freshwater fish.

If we observe their behavior in the hippopotamus enclosure, we can see how they feed on their feces, as well as algae and plant residues.

Another species is the labeos. It is a very peaceful species despite its size, they can reach a size of up to 50 cm. It is a territorial animal that chooses its territory and grows quickly. It alternates its activity between remaining hidden and swimming freely in the middle and lower areas of the aquarium. They feed on algae and all types of plant residues and as they gain confidence, they will explore the hippo's skin, feeding on its dead skin just as they do in nature.

Some new inhabitants that will soon make the BIOPARC family grow because they are a species that has great ease of reproduction.
