The animal care team has prepared a very emotional party to commemorate the milestone that Ebo's birth represented in the international conservation project in which BIOPARC participates of this species classified as critically endangered on the IUCN "Red List". .
Hosting a group of gorillas is a real source of pride for BIOPARC and, at the same time, an enormous responsibility. Because the goal is clear, participate actively and in international collaboration to save from extinction to this and many other species that are seriously threatened. Practically every day we receive news regarding the deterioration of nature and the consequent biodiversity loss. The case of the gorillas is an example of the terrible consequences of human actions, which literally pushed them to the limit. For this reason it was even more important the BIOPARC challenge because, for the first time, the Valencian Community had the opportunity to contribute to its conservation and the park's contribution has been a success.
On the one hand, bringing society closer to the knowledge of this majestic primate to awaken interest in its protection and, on the other, with conservation, both in situ through the BIOPARC Foundation, and ex situ with controlled reproduction within the European program (EEP). Fruit of it today 11 years ago, Ebo, the first “Valencian” gorilla, was born.
People who visited the park have been able to contemplate this environmental enrichment.
From the first hour the animal care team began preparations for the enclosure that recreates the tropical jungles, this morning adorned with garlands and other typical elements of an anniversary party that is framed within animal welfare protocols such as “environmental enrichment.” .
A huge, striking and delicious cake was the center of attention and, on this occasion, the birthday boy Ebo was the first to approach and taste the delicacies made with his favorite fruits and vegetables. Subsequently, the rest of the members of the “family”, the silverback, the adult females and the little brothers also enjoyed the celebration.
Recently IUCN experts have emphasized the relevance of animal parks in the preservation of biodiversity.
The BIOPARC of Fuengirola and Valencia, with 15 individuals in total, host the largest group of western lowland gorillas in Spain (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), a species listed as critically endangered on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List. Very recently, the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of this institution issued a statement highlighting and granting a crucial role in the preservation of biodiversity to organizations such as BIOPARC and its Foundations.
This is a highly relevant fact that highlights the work and dedication that has been carried out for so many years with encouraging results in BIOPARC like the births of the first gorillas not only Valencian, but also Andalusian, which will turn three years old in November.
