Bioparc Valencia - newborn Seba python chicks - September 2013Yesterday the first Seba Python hatchlings. The eggs are hatching little by little and 4 snakes have already been born. with a weight between 70 and 100 grams, have a length of 45 to 50 cm. The hatchlings will remain out of public view, in indoor facilities, although we can observe their parents in the recreation of the subsoil of the African savanna.

This species of snake is the largest in Africa, has an average size of 5 meters in length, and can reach up to 8m. and about 100kg. of weight. They feed mainly on terrestrial vertebrates, which they capture with a bite and retain by firmly closing their jaws, while their powerful body coils around the victim, preventing it from breathing and killing it by suffocation.

Due to the magnitude that this species can reach, its constricting power es huge allowing you to include in your diet when they are adults, large animals such as primates, crocodiles, large lizards and antelopes. After this intake, several months may pass without eating.

They can normally be recognized by their triangular blackish-gray-brown head with two light-colored bands that form a striking mouth-shaped spearhead. It's about a reptile admired for its spectacularity and the mythologization of its name. Although it is not a threatened animal thanks to its wide geographical distribution, mainly throughout sub-Saharan Africa, there has been a great decline of this species in recent years due to hunting for its meat and valuable skin.
