The animal care team at BIOPARC Valencia prepared a very special Halloween as part of their environmental enrichment strategy to promote the well-being of the different species. The elephant herd with their calves Malik and Makena, the families of warthogs, banded mongooses, and gorillas, as well as the iconic lions and hippos, provided some amazing images as they enjoyed their favorite foods hidden among tombstones, ghosts, pumpkins, and spiderwebs.
The many people visiting BIOPARC these days have been able to see a unusual image of the animals of this nature park when the faithful recreation of natural habitats such as the savanna or the jungles appeared decorated with typical Halloween elements.

Pumpkins, tombstones made from recycled boxes, and spider webs have been used to form a “terrifyingly natural” theme specially prepared by the animal welfare team as part of the environmental enrichment actionsA real surprise to boost the search instincts, awakening the senses of different species.

While exploring their enclosures, the animals have found a proposal tailored to their diet and behaviorThe fierce lions had pumpkins filled with fresh meat and entrails made with bloody gelatin to enhance their predatory instincts and provide a valuable olfactory stimulus. For calves like Makena and Malik, everything is a game, and under the watchful eyes of their mothers and the rest of the elephant herd, they have destroyed everything in their path. In the case of the gorillas, it is striking how they rummage through the decorative items with their nimble hands until they find their favorite food.
