BIOPARC Valencia expands the group of “monkeys with the stripe in the eye”

A female white-crowned mangabey, one of the most endangered African primate species, is successfully integrated into the breeding group of the Valencian park within the international conservation program.

Protecting the rich biodiversity of our planet means acting on multitude of species that are in danger of extinction and that in most cases are unknown to most people. Today we know that there are species that disappear without us still being aware of their existence. Thus, the responsibility assumed by conservation institutions involves intervening both “in situ” in the habitats of origin, such as “ex situ” with international preservation programs (EEP) to guarantee its survival.

One of these little known species is the white-crowned mangabey (Cercocebus atys lunulatus) and, in this case, it is news because a female that arrived last November from the Botanical Zoo of Jerez, has completed its adaptation period in BIOPARC Valencia. The commitment to preservation also entails drawing attention to these necessary actions and now Torcuata, 5 years old, is already enjoying the large outdoor enclosure along with the male Vito and the females Juanita, Hope and Nasha. Her role will be key with the integration in this important reproductive group where 4 births have already been achieved.

“Monkeys with the stripe in the eye.”

BIOPARC Valencia faithfully recreates the forests of Equatorial Africa and in one of the characteristic multispecies enclosures we can see the male gorillas with their mangabeys, also called “monkeys with the stripe in the eye”, due to the particular white eyelids whose movements allow them to communicate and also use vocalizations to report possible dangers. In nature, its geographical distribution is restricted to the northern part of the Gulf of Guinea on the western coast of Africa, a “hot” area due to its biodiversity where BIOPARC Foundation collaborates in an international project for its conservation. Their brown fur highlights their white lower limbs and, with quadrupedal locomotion, they spend 70% of their time on the ground. Their powerful jaws also stand out, which they use to crack the shells of nuts.
