There are only two breeding groups of this small antelope from the African jungles in two parks in all of Europe and one of them is BIOPARC Valencia, which is participating very successfully in its international conservation program, as it is the fourth birth.
These first days of autumn, the fourth breeding of Natal Red Duiker (Cephalophus natalensis) within the framework of the European conservation program (ESB) for this species. In Europe there are only two reproductive groups in zoological institutions and one of them is the Valencian park. The first calf was born in 2017 and BIOPARC currently houses a group of 4 individuals, the parents and two offspring.
El Natal red duiker It is included in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, currently with “least concern”, although has disappeared from large areas of its geographical distribution due to the expansion of human settlements, agriculture and hunting. It is the smallest of the duikers and gets its name from its reddish tail with a black and white tuft that stands out from its bright chestnut coat. It is a territorial animal and the male marks his area by rubbing the secretory glands on his face on the vegetation and even on his partner or offspring.
In BIOPARC Valencia we can see them in the area that recreates the jungles of equatorial Africa, in a multispecies enclosure along with two other types of antelope, the eastern bongos (Tragelaphus euryceros isaaci), in extreme danger of extinction, the Dik-dik of Kirk (Madoqua kirkii), the smallest antelope in Africa; and the beautiful black-crowned cranes (Balearica pavonina).
