BIOPARC wanted to share with animal lovers the choice of name for the calf of one of the most endangered subspecies of giraffe on the planet.
The Rothschild giraffe born last November turns 2 months old this week. Belonging to one of the most endangered subspecies on Earth: la Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi), also known as Baringo. The total number of giraffes estimated by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) in 2013 was less than 80.000 individuals of the nine recognized subspecies. The Baringo, which lives in BIOPARC Valencia, was classified as threatened by the well-known Red List of this entity and its conservation is considered of high importance, since a population of less than 1.000 individuals in the wild due to habitat destruction and poaching.
Due to the importance and symbolism of this calf that represents a new “hope” for the conservation of biodiversity, BIOPARC Valencia wanted share your name choice with all those people who want to participate, especially with Valencians. So, on your website has posted 4 options forby popular vote, it is decided what this precious giraffe will be called.
The proposed names for the Rothschild giraffe calf are:
- Kenya, one of the African countries where this species is currently found.
- twiga, It means giraffe in Swahili.
- Mandisa, name of African origin that refers to sweet.
- Star, in Valencian “star”.
The period for the election will be until the end of January and in February, the month of BIOPARC's ninth anniversary, the chosen one will be announced.
