They are generalist omnivores, they feed mainly on crop grains, they can also feed on small plants, small invertebrates, such as insects, mollusks, millipedes or crustaceans, and small vertebrates, such as fish, amphibians or reptiles.

Although it is a species that does not migrate, it does make daily and seasonal movements of several dozen km in its range.
Their breeding season occurs during the rainy season, from May to December in the western populations and from July to January in the eastern ones, and they nest in pairs in territories of 0,5-1 km2.
During the dry season, when they do not reproduce, they congregate in large groups of several hundred individuals.
The loss and degradation of their natural habitats, due to the drainage of wetlands for conversion into cropland, industrial pollution, arson, and industrial and dam construction, are their main threats.
Like the Grey Crowned Crane, they sleep in trees at night, thus avoiding attack by predators.
